The Explanation for Mom

Here is my explanation I would present to those smart and curious folks who want to know why gravity works. My mom fit in this category, bless her soul.

The Universe is really old. The only thing that lasts as long as that is something which does nothing. Here is the problem with doing nothing: there is other stuff in the Universe. That other stuff prevents our stuff from being utterly alone. If we could be utterly alone, there would be no gravity and no light.

The question becomes how can you do almost nothing? The answer can be seen in a slinky. Pick one up very carefully. Oops, it does do a wee bit of wobbling. It is this wee be of wobbling that gravity and light is about. Physics puts 3D space and time in the same house. They wobble together. The math of time and space wobbling is subtle. The physics community has cruised on by this area, following the money to big machines that might get data on theories too confusing to ever explain.

This site demonstrates that when time and space play together out in the open, odd but fun things result.
